Heavy rains triggered floods and landslides across India and Nepal, killing 70 people. In India, 56 people died, while Nepal reported 14 deaths and 11 people missing. Authorities warn of further flash flood risks, infohub.kz reports.
In India's Uttar Pradesh state, 66.5 mm of rain fell from September 25 to the morning of September 27, against a normal of 7.6 mm for the period. According to authorities, 46 people were injured and more than a thousand homes were damaged. Rescue teams are working in flooded areas and delivering aid to residents.
In Nepal, flash flood warnings are in effect in 49 of the country's 77 districts. Water levels in major rivers and their tributaries continue to rise. Power supplies are completely cut in four districts, and damaged cables and power sources have disrupted communications in some areas. Flooding also damaged structures and pylons of a hydropower plant's transmission lines on the Rahuganga River.
In India, serious conditions were recorded at 30 river monitoring stations across seven states. Water levels in the Ganges, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada rivers exceeded danger marks.
Separately, Nepali authorities reported an avalanche near Himlung Himal. It swept over a base camp where workers were preparing tents for climbers. Ten people are missing; no foreign climbers were at the camp when the avalanche struck.
