Tehran insists on compensation for damage caused by a strike on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said after a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha, reports infohub.kz.
Araghchi noted that the Ukrainian foreign minister assured him the attack was unintentional and that Kyiv had no intention of escalating the conflict. “Iran also does not seek escalation. However, we made it clear that any attacks on our citizens or our interests are unacceptable. The damage caused must be compensated,” Araghchi said. For his part, Andrii Sybiha said he called on Iran to refrain from steps that lead to escalation and to stop supporting Russia. He emphasized that Ukraine’s actions are defensive in nature.
On July 25, Ukrainian forces struck an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea. The blast killed one crew member and injured another.
