Iran announced it intercepted and destroyed an advanced American unmanned aerial vehicle over the Strait of Hormuz using a new air defense system, the website infohub.kz reports.

According to NUR.KZ, citing Press TV, the press service of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said an upgraded US MQ-1 drone was destroyed over the Strait of Hormuz.

"The IRGC said its aerospace division intercepted and destroyed an MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz using a new air defense system integrated into the country's air defense network," the broadcaster reported.

The report notes this is not the first US drone to be shot down. Last week, Iranian air defense forces also detected, tracked and destroyed a drone in the southeast of the country, after which they struck and eliminated it.

Earlier, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers and released video footage.

The IRGC then said it had struck 20 vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the attacks as a response to the US strike.
