Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Islam Makhachev defeated Ireland's Ian Machado Garry in the main event of UFC 330 in Philadelphia, reports infohub.kz.
This bout was Makhachev's first as welterweight champion (up to 77.1 kg), and he successfully defended his title. His opponent, Machado Garry, entered the fight as the division's number one contender.
The fight lasted all five rounds. In the second round, the Russian knocked down his opponent. At the end of the bout, the judges awarded a unanimous decision victory to Makhachev (49:46, 49:46, 48:47).
For the 34-year-old athlete, this victory was his 17th consecutive win in the UFC, the longest winning streak in the organization's history. The previous record was held by Brazil's Anderson Silva with 16 straight wins.
In his professional career, Makhachev has 29 wins and only one loss. He was previously the UFC lightweight champion (up to 70.3 kg).
For Machado Garry, this is his second career loss. His first was inflicted by Kazakhstani fighter Shavkat Rakhmonov. The 28-year-old Irishman now has 17 wins.
