DC Studios chief James Gunn has confirmed that Harley Quinn is part of the long-term plans for the revamped DCU, but whether Margot Robbie will return to the role remains uncertain, infohub.kz reports.
The filmmaker discussed his intentions on the podcast "The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?", cited by Variety. The director stressed that his 2021 film "The Suicide Squad" is officially recognized as part of the new universe's canon, but Quinn's own continuity still comes with a "small asterisk."
"She's incredible. I love her as Harley. I don't know if she'll want to play her again. Maybe she's moved past it. But if Margot wants to play her in the DCU, I'll bend over backwards to fit her organically into this world. And if not, then I might choose someone else," Gunn said.
The Australian actress first brought the supervillain to life in David Ayer's 2016 film "Suicide Squad," then reprised the role in "Birds of Prey" and Gunn's project.
The director noted that integrating Robbie's version would require narrative effort: in the new canon, Batman already exists, but the Joker has yet to appear, and the character's past is inextricably tied to him. In addition, after the global triumph of "Barbie" and filming in the drama "Wuthering Heights," the actress's schedule has become extremely tight, including preparations for Tim Burton's project "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman." If Robbie declines, the role will go to another actress.
