In Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, a tragedy occurred when a speeding train struck and killed four workers who were performing maintenance on the railway tracks. The incident happened at Shin-Kanuma Station, north of Tokyo, reports infohub.kz.
According to police and operator Tobu Railway, the victims were three workers and one supervisor. They were weeding the tracks when the train, entering the station, hit them. All four were taken to hospital but could not be saved.
Six other people at the scene were unharmed: two workers, three observers, and a team leader. They had been tasked with spraying herbicides. About 50 passengers on the train were also safe.
Railway officials said it is unclear why the workers did not leave the tracks as the train approached. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
