Japan plans to make the practical driving test more difficult for drivers aged 75 and older who have traffic violations, starting in 2027. The decision comes in response to the insufficient effectiveness of the current testing system, which does not always identify high-risk drivers. The updated test will include additional maneuvers to check precision in handling pedals and steering, according to infohub.kz.
The National Police Agency notes that frequent accidents involving elderly people occur due to confusion between the accelerator and brake pedals. Therefore, the exam will add an exercise involving reversing and then turning around. Additionally, a stricter point system is proposed: penalty points will be given for failing to check the road and for crossing the stop line.
The current practical test, introduced in May 2022, includes five basic elements. However, recurring incidents have shown the need for a more rigorous assessment of driving skills. The new rules aim to reduce accident rates and improve road safety in the country.
