Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, may become one of the co-owners of the English football club Liverpool. According to Sky News, a consortium of investors including the American billionaire is close to acquiring more than 30% of the club's shares... reports the website infohub.kz.
The investment group is led by businessman Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and former shareholder of Queens Park Rangers. Mittal is well known in Kazakhstan: metallurgical companies associated with him had controlled the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant in Temirtau since 1995, which later operated under the name ArcelorMittal Temirtau. In 2023, ArcelorMittal sold its Kazakh assets. In addition to Bezos, the consortium also includes Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook.
According to Sky News, Liverpool's current owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is preparing to announce the deal in the coming days. One source suggests that an official announcement could come as early as this week, although the process may be delayed until next week.
It is important to note that this is a minority stake. FSG, which has controlled Liverpool since 2010, will remain the largest shareholder after the sale.
The proposed deal values Liverpool at approximately $6 billion. If completed, it would be one of the highest valuations for a football club in history and demonstrates how much the asset has grown in value during FSG's ownership.
The American group acquired Liverpool in 2010 for just £300 million when the club was in a difficult financial position. The last transaction involving its shares took place in 2023: investment company Dynasty Equity acquired a small stake at a valuation of over $4.5 billion. Thus, in three years, the estimated value of Liverpool has increased by about a third.
For Bezos, a potential investment in Liverpool would be his first significant foray into major European football. Saverin, on the other hand, has previously attempted to enter the Premier League – in 2022, he participated in a consortium that unsuccessfully bid for Chelsea.
The likely change in the shareholder structure comes amid significant changes within the club itself. Liverpool last won the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, but finished fifth in the following season. In May, the club parted ways with head coach Arne Slot. Andoni Iraola has been appointed as his replacement.
