US Senator John Kennedy said he may run for president in 2028, but for now intends to seek re-election to the Senate. He made the remarks on NBC News, according to infohub.kz.
In an interview with NBC News, the Louisiana senator confirmed that he is considering a bid for the US presidency in 2028. Asked by the anchor whether he is thinking about entering the presidential race, the politician replied: "Yes."
"My plan right now is to run for re-election, but as I've said, if I don't think I can still be effective in the Senate, I would consider that possibility," Kennedy said.
He stressed that he has not made a final decision. The senator is up for re-election in 2028.
Kennedy also left open the possibility of entering the presidential race if he deems other Republican contenders less suitable.
Asked about a possible rivalry with Vice President JD Vance, seen as a likely Republican candidate in 2028, Kennedy declined to answer.
"I'm not going to talk about another potential candidate. I'm not ready for that yet," the senator said.
The 2028 election will be the first since 2012 in which Donald Trump is not the Republican Party's candidate.
