Almaty's Kairat, playing with a man advantage from the 33rd minute in Nicosia, lost 1-0 to Omonia in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the 2026/27 Champions League, reports infohub.kz.
The July Champions League qualifiers play a key role in allocating champions of various countries to different European competitions. The winner of this Cypriot-Kazakhstani tie will secure a place in the Conference League group stage, while also continuing to fight for two higher-ranked tournaments.
After the 2025/26 Champions League and the UEFA Youth League, any other tournament would be a step down for Kairat in terms of class and finances, so the Almaty club considers such an outcome undesirable.
The draw was not kind to Kairat: Kazakh teams have struggled against Cypriot opponents recently. Omonia is no pushover — the Nicosia side played in the Conference League group stage last season and is aiming higher.
After a chaotic opening, the goal against the visitors came unexpectedly. Adilet Sadybekov, while intercepting a cross from the wing, inadvertently set up Panayiotis Andreou, who scored in the 13th minute — 1-0. In the 33rd minute, the hosts were reduced to 10 men: Hungarian Loic Nego committed a hard foul on Luis Mate, received a yellow card, which was upgraded to red after a VAR review.
With the numerical advantage, Kairat could have equalized before halftime, but in stoppage time, Jorginho and Alexander Martynovich missed a golden chance. At halftime, Edmilson replaced Sadybekov, and in the second half, the visitors pinned the hosts in their own box. Jorginho had two opportunities to score, Alexander Mrynsky fired a shot, but Fabiano made the save. Azamat Tuyakbaev hit the post. As in last year's match against Pafos, Kairat failed to capitalize on the man advantage.
The final push came to nothing: debutant Gustavo Mendonca, a product of Benfica's academy, came on in the 83rd minute and had two shots on goal, both off target. The Cypriots countered with dangerous attacks, and if not for Tamerlan Anarbekov, the hosts would have won by a larger margin.
To qualify for the Champions League group stage, Kairat must survive four qualifying rounds. In the first round, the Kazakh champions beat Montenegro's Sutjeska twice — 2-1 and 2-0. If they overcome Omonia, their next opponent will be Bulgaria's Levski or Romania's Universitatea. Twenty-nine teams automatically qualify for the Champions League league phase, with seven more spots determined through qualifying. Some eliminated teams will continue in the Europa League and Conference League. If Kairat lose to the Cypriots on aggregate, they will drop into the Europa League third qualifying round, where potential opponents include Sweden's Mjällby or Gibraltar's Lincoln. The return leg is scheduled for July 29.
