A man in Karaganda stood trial on charges of a series of thefts committed on a train and in a cafe, and was sentenced to restricted freedom, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the official Telegram channel of the courts of the Karaganda region, the Alikhan Bokeikhan District Court of Karaganda heard a criminal case against a defendant accused of repeated secret theft of another person's property, committed with entry into a production premises (Article 188, Part 3, Paragraphs 2 and 3 of the Criminal Code).
The court established that in September 2024 the defendant illegally entered a production premises — a cafe kiosk — through a window vent, from where he secretly stole a mobile phone and a kitchen knife. The total damage amounted to 55,000 tenge.
In October 2024, he boarded a passenger train running between Kokshetau and Kyzylorda with the aim of stealing from passengers. Over the course of one night, on the stretch between Karaganda-Passazhirskaya station and Karabas station in Karaganda, the defendant secretly stole mobile phones from three different passengers and a women's handbag containing two gold rings from a fourth. The total value was 460,000 tenge.
The man's guilt was fully proven by his confession, a seizure report of the stolen items, an identification report in which the victims identified the seized items, and other case materials.
The prosecutor and the victims asked for a sentence of restricted freedom. The defense asked for a sentence not involving imprisonment.
In passing sentence, the court recognized sincere remorse for the crime and compensation for the damage caused by the offense as circumstances mitigating criminal liability and punishment. The court found no circumstances aggravating criminal liability and punishment.
By the court's verdict, the man was found guilty and sentenced to restricted freedom for a term of 3 years and 6 months, with involvement in forced labor and the imposition of probation supervision.
