A resident of the Kyzylorda region has been awarded over 1.5 million tenge in compensation after doctors left a gauze pad in his body during surgery. Due to the medical error, the man suffered from severe pain and a non-healing wound for two months until the foreign object was removed at another hospital, reports infohub.kz.
According to the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, the surgical error caused the patient prolonged intense pain and a non-healing postoperative wound, forcing him to undergo a second operation, which he paid for out of pocket.
During the trial, it was revealed that while removing a cyst, doctors forgot a gauze pad inside the patient's body. Only 60 days later, at a different hospital, the foreign object was extracted, which had been preventing the wound from healing.
"The presence of the foreign object was confirmed by the operation protocol, medical records, video footage, and explanations from the representative of the medical facility where the second operation took place," the Supreme Court said in a statement.
The court found that during the initial surgery, the surgeons failed to comply with mandatory standards, and postoperative monitoring was not conducted. Additionally, medical documentation was kept improperly.
Ultimately, the court ordered the hospital to pay the plaintiff over 1.5 million tenge in compensation for moral and material damages.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that Court No. 2 in Uralsk ordered a city hospital to pay 4 million tenge in compensation to the son of a 58-year-old patient who died in intensive care the day after admission. During the proceedings, it was established that the man had been repeatedly denied examinations.
