A Kazakh sailor aboard a tanker detained in India will soon leave the vessel and be able to return home, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan said, according to infohub.kz.

The ministry's press service said the Kazakh citizen, a crew member of the MT UNITY held at the Indian port of Paradip, will shortly disembark and be accommodated at a hotel. He will then leave India.

The ministry stressed that Kazakh diplomats continue to provide consular support to the citizen. "The situation remains under the control of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry," the press service added.

The Cameroon-flagged tanker was detained off the Indian port of Paradip; the vessel was seized back in May after completing cargo operations as part of financial claims against the shipowner. It was then established that 20 Russian citizens were aboard, along with one Kazakh citizen and two Egyptian citizens. The Russian Consulate General in Kolkata said the detained oil tanker needs repairs and cannot continue its voyage.

In September, after reports emerged that a Kazakh citizen was aboard the tanker detained in India back in May, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry issued a statement noting that a note had been sent. On October 9, a court ordered India to organize the repatriation of the crew from the Unity tanker.
