Kazakhstan's national team achieved one of its best results in the history of international subject olympiads. The country's young scientists won seven medals at the world's largest competitions in biology and chemistry, reports the website infohub.kz.
At the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO-2026), held in Vilnius, Lithuania from July 12 to 19, the Kazakh team earned three silver medals and one bronze. This result matched the national team's best performance, set in 1996. The olympiad featured over 330 students from 84 countries, who tackled complex theoretical problems and completed laboratory tasks.
Silver medals were awarded to: Yersultan Kaiyrken (11th grade, Bilim-Innovation Lyceum for gifted boys, Pavlodar region), Alikhan Ashirkhanov (9th grade, specialized Bilim-Innovation Lyceum, Almaty), and Sofya Zheltova (11th grade, NIS Almaty-Medeu). The bronze medal went to Yevgeniya Mezhenina (11th grade, NIS Karaganda). The team was coached and led by Leila Askarova, Ilyas Sakimov, Kamila Sadykova, and Dinmukhamed Urazbayev.
Kazakh students also delivered an impressive performance at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO-2026) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. All four participants became medalists: one gold and three silver. The gold medal was won by Aizere Zheniskhanova (11th grade, NIS Ust-Kamenogorsk). Silver medalists: Abilmansur Kali (11th grade, NIS Nura district, Astana), Danil Poletayev (11th grade, Lyceum No. 134, Almaty), and Ansar Zhaksylykov (11th grade, Spectrum International School, Astana). Over 350 students from more than 90 countries took part in the chemistry olympiad, which included theoretical and practical stages.
