With New Year's Eve approaching, Kazakhstan residents may get an extra chance to rest on December 31. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population, whether to work that day is left to the employer's discretion, infohub.kz reports.
Under current labor legislation, employers may, by agreement with employees, designate December 31 as a shortened working day, introduce flexible working hours, or give staff the day off entirely, the ministry said.
The ministry recalled that holidays in the country are governed by the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan." The document provides for national, state, professional, and other holidays.
"At the same time, non-working days are those on which national and state holidays are celebrated. However, holiday dates are usually established in honor of significant historical, cultural, or sociopolitical events and carry ideological, educational, and cultural significance," the ministry added.
Thus, an employer may designate December 31 as an additional day off in accordance with labor legislation and a collective agreement.
