Kazakhstan has seen a rise in fraud cases involving artificial intelligence. Scammers fake a person's voice and appearance to pose as a relative or acquaintance during a call or video chat, urging the victim to transfer money urgently, reports infohub.kz.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs warns: do not comply with requests for immediate money transfers. Instead, call the person back on their usual number. Families can also agree on a secret word or a control question to verify the identity of the caller.
The ministry reminds that you should never share bank card details, SMS codes, or passwords with strangers. If you suspect fraud, contact the police immediately.
Earlier, a court found three members of a fraudulent scheme guilty. They posed as relatives of victims on WhatsApp and asked for money transfers. The investigation established 15 episodes of online fraud, and about 5 million tenge were withdrawn through the account of one of the money mules. Two defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three to four years and one month, while another received three years of restricted freedom.
