In September, Kazakhs moved their savings out of foreign-currency deposits and into tenge accounts: bank deposits grew by 1.3 trillion tenge, reaching 51.5 trillion tenge. Over the month, 322 billion tenge was withdrawn from foreign-currency savings accounts, while tenge accounts gained 388 billion tenge. The news was reported by infohub.kz.
According to National Bank statistics, the figures reflect the net change in deposit balances — that is, top-ups minus withdrawals. Exchange-rate revaluation may also have affected the dynamics of foreign-currency deposits.
By the end of September, deposits held by individuals had reached 28.6 trillion tenge. Over the month they grew by just 65 billion tenge — compared with growth of 137.6 billion tenge in August. Since the start of the year, the increase has amounted to 10%.
The modest monthly growth is largely explained by a significant net outflow from foreign-currency deposits, which totaled 322 billion tenge (-7.3%). The volume of individuals' FX deposits fell to 4 trillion tenge. In the same month, the tenge strengthened by 3.19%, to 449.75 tenge.
At the same time, tenge deposits grew by 387.5 billion tenge, or 1.6%, to 24.5 trillion tenge. For comparison, tenge deposits rose by 131 billion tenge in August.
Recall that, according to the National Bank, in August 2026 the volume of deposits held by individuals in Kazakh banks grew by 132.8 billion tenge, or 0.4%, reaching 30.66 trillion tenge.
