In Kazakhstan, certain medical conditions can serve as grounds for revoking a driver's license, but a diagnosis alone does not automatically bar a person from driving. The list of medical contraindications was approved by Order No. 853 of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan; information on such conditions is forwarded to internal affairs bodies, and the final decision to revoke a license rests with a court, infohub.kz reports.

Absolute contraindications include certain severe mental disorders, epilepsy, achromatopsia and blindness in both eyes. The list also covers schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders, certain chronic mental disorders with severe or frequently recurring symptoms, and substance use disorders where remission has lasted less than two years.

In some cases, a person may continue to drive using special equipment or under certain conditions. For example, drivers with impaired limb function may use a vehicle with hand controls. Certain vision impairments allow driving with glasses or contact lenses, while hearing impairments permit the use of a hearing aid or another corrective device.

Requirements vary depending on the vehicle category. Passenger cars, trucks, buses and other categories have different conditions: categories C, CE, D, DE, C1, D1 and several others, in particular, face stricter vision requirements. Blindness in one eye, for instance, is a contraindication for such drivers. Separate restrictions apply to vestibular disorders, pronounced vision impairments, certain consequences of nervous system damage, hearing impairments and musculoskeletal problems.

According to the Ministry of Health, since the start of 2026, information about medical changes that could affect a person's ability to drive has been identified in more than 21,000 drivers. Police filed lawsuits against more than 13,000 of them. Under rulings that have entered into force, about 7,400 licenses have been revoked.

The Ministry of Health separately stressed that a license is not revoked automatically simply because a diagnosis exists. A restriction is possible if the health condition is on the list of medical contraindications and could affect driving safety.
