With cold weather setting in, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations has issued a series of recommendations for drivers, the website infohub.kz reports.
The ministry's website warned that Kazakhstan is entering a period when snowfall, ice, blizzards and sharp drops in visibility become increasingly likely — all of which can seriously complicate conditions on the roads.
"Before setting out, it is advisable to check the weather forecast and road conditions. When a storm warning is issued and traffic restrictions are introduced, it is better to postpone the trip and stay in a safe place. It is also necessary to monitor messages from official sources about road closures and restrictions. There is no point risking your life just to stick to your plans," the Emergency Ministry said.
If weather conditions allow travel, Kazakhstanis are advised to check the technical condition of their vehicle. Before a trip, they should tell relatives their route and expected time of arrival. Where possible, they should fill up the car, especially for a long journey.
"In winter it is important to have a necessary supply of items and equipment in the car for an unforeseen situation. It is recommended to keep in the trunk: a supply of fuel, a flashlight with spare batteries, a tow rope, a first-aid kit, a charger or power bank for your phone, warm clothing, drinking water and food, and a small shovel," the rescuers added.
The Emergency Ministry reminds people what to do if an emergency occurs on the road: stop in a safe place where possible, turn on the hazard lights and mark the vehicle in accordance with traffic rules. The vehicle should not be left unattended without need. The incident must be reported to the emergency services by calling 112.
The rescuers urge drivers to take a responsible approach to preparing their cars for winter, to take weather conditions into account and not to endanger themselves or other road users.
