Kazakhstan's men's epee fencing team won the team event at the 20th Summer Asian Games in Japan. Ruslan Kurbanov, Kirill Prokhodov, Vadim Sharlaimov and Yerlik Sertay claimed the gold medals for the team, infohub.kz reports.

On their way to the decisive bout, the Kazakh epeeists, who are the 2026 world champions, beat Qatar 45:27, Singapore 45:36 and Hong Kong 45:34 in succession.

The final got off to a poor start for Kazakhstan. After four bouts they trailed badly, 10:19. But showing their will to win, they fought back to level the score and then edge ahead, 43:42. In the end, the two-time Asian Games champions (1994, 2002) became three-time winners.

The final standings in the men's epee team event at the 2026 Asian Games (September 27, fencing, epee, men) are as follows: first place — Kazakhstan, second — South Korea, with Hong Kong and Japan sharing third.

Kazakhstan's sabre women came up just short of the podium. The Kazakh team of Karina Dospay, Aigerim Sarybay, Anastasia Gulik and Kaisha Zhanibek beat Thailand 45:32 but lost to the host nation in the quarterfinals, 40:45.

Before the current tournament, Kazakhstan had won three gold, four silver and 13 bronze medals in fencing at the Asian Games. The 14th bronze, already in Nagoya, was won by Artem Sarkisyan. The 15th came from the women's epee team, the 16th from the sabre fencers. Kirill Prokhodov's medal at the 2026 Asian Games was the fifth silver, while the epeeists claimed the fourth gold.

The 20th Summer Asian Games officially opened on September 19 and will close on October 4. Athletes from 45 countries are competing for 460 sets of medals. Kazakhstan's team at the 2026 Asian Games includes 558 athletes in 35 sports.

On the first day of the Games, Kazakhstan won four gold medals. Cyclists Rinata Sultanova and Alexey Lutsenko became champions, along with karateka Zholaman Bigabyl and Sofya Berultseva. MMA fighter Yerkingali Burkutalin added the team's fifth gold, and his mixed martial arts teammate Kadyrbek Shynbayev the sixth. On September 23, Lutsenko became a two-time champion of the 2026 Asian Games. The eighth gold was won on September 24 by rowers Vladislav Yakovlev and Ivan Chernukhin in the men's coxless pairs. Yasmina Toksanbayeva today won the ninth gold in race walking.

After seven days of the Games, Kazakhstan was fifth in the unofficial medal standings.
