Kazakhstan's men's sabre fencing team has reached the podium at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, infohub.kz reports.
In the team event, the country was represented by Artyom Sarkisyan, Nazarbay Sattarkhan, Nurmukhammed Zhailybay and Kuanysh Yergashbay. In the round of 16, the Kazakh sabre fencers defeated Saudi Arabia 45-32, then overcame China 45-40 in the next round.
In the semifinals, Kazakhstan faced Japan, which proved stronger, winning 45-34. The rules do not provide for a third-place bout, so the Kazakh team received bronze medals, as did Hong Kong.
For the national team, this is the fourth fencing medal at the 2026 Asian Games. Earlier, in individual events, Sarkisyan won bronze, while epee fencer Kirill Prokhodov took silver. In the women's epee team competition, Kazakhstan won bronze.
At the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou 2022, the sabre fencers also reached the podium. Then Sarkisyan, Sattarkhan, Zhanat Nabiyev and Mukhamedali Rakhmanali won bronze in the team event.
Also on Saturday, the women's foil competition took place. Kazakhstan's team, consisting of Sofia Aktayeva, Alyona Gnoyeva and Alina Iskanderova, was eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing to China 36-40.
