Kazakhstan has held talks with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding attacks on oil tankers in the Black Sea, reports infohub.kz.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kazakhstan's Ambassador to the UK, Alibek Bakayev, met with IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez. The meeting focused on the situation in the Black Sea.
Bakayev stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of commercial vessels, including tankers carrying Kazakh oil. He noted Kazakhstan's interest in creating safe conditions for shipping and the stability of sea routes, which are crucial for the country's foreign trade interests and international energy security.
Dominguez supported Kazakhstan's position and emphasized the fundamental importance of protecting civilian and commercial vessels. He assured that the IMO would consistently advocate for compliance with shipping safety principles and the protection of civilian maritime transport.
The parties also discussed the strategic role of the Caspian Sea as a key link in international transport and logistics chains. It was noted that the development of the sea section of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, increasing cargo volumes through the Caspian, and modernizing the ports of Aktau and Kuryk create new opportunities for trade and economic ties between Central Asian countries, China, and Europe.
The IMO Secretary-General highlighted a wide range of areas for further cooperation and confirmed the organization's readiness to provide assistance to Kazakhstan.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized UN agency that develops and improves international norms and standards for maritime safety and security, prevention of marine pollution from ships, and other issues of international maritime transport. Kazakhstan has been an IMO member since 1994.
