Kazakhstan has established a departmental medal of the Ministry of Internal Affairs named "Halyq Qaharmany Ghaziz Baitasov" on the instructions of the head of state. The first medal was presented to the hero's widow, Gulzhamal Tazhieva, as a mark of respect and gratitude, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs' information and media portal, the new medal will be awarded to law enforcement officers who display courage and heroism in the line of duty.
"His feat will forever remain in the memory of the people... Police Captain Ghaziz Baitasov protected peaceful citizens at the cost of his own life, showing exceptional courage, selflessness and devotion to duty. His heroic act is forever inscribed in the history of Kazakhstan and serves as an example of selfless service to the Motherland," the ministry said.
Recall that on November 12, 2011, Police Captain Ghaziz Baitasov attempted to detain an armed criminal, and a shootout ensued between them. Baitasov inflicted two gunshot wounds on the criminal. As a result, both the criminal and the captain died. By decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Baitasov was posthumously awarded the order "Halyq Qaharmany."
