Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has clarified when citizens may carry a knife and what restrictions apply, infohub.kz reports.
According to the ministry, edged weapons, which include knives, may be purchased by adults who hold a permit to store and carry civilian weapons as well as a hunting license.
"A special permit is required not only to carry a knife but also to purchase one. In addition, an acquired edged weapon must be entered in the owner's hunting license. A knife must also be bought exclusively in specialized stores," the Ministry of Internal Affairs explained.
The ministry noted that it continuously monitors information about the sale of all types of weapons and items structurally similar to weapons.
"If such information is confirmed, appropriate response measures are taken in accordance with current legislation. Civilian weapons are sold exclusively in the sales areas of specialized stores," the ministry said.
In addition, under paragraph 9 of part 2 of Article 7 of the Law "On State Control over the Circulation of Certain Types of Weapons," the circulation of edged bladed weapons longer than 90 millimeters without the relevant registration is prohibited.
"If you carry a knife for household purposes, its blade must not exceed 9 centimeters. If you take a knife with you when necessary on a trip, on transport or to other places, it is advisable to keep this rule in mind," the Interior Ministry clarified.
The ministry also added that in the first eight months of 2026, six operational and preventive operations were conducted. They are aimed at preventing offenses committed with the use of weapons and at identifying illegally stored weapons.
