Kazakhstan is updating the content of school subjects to reflect the rise of artificial intelligence. As reported by infohub.kz, the Ministry of Education has announced the changes.

The ministry noted that the rapid development of technology, changing labor market demands, and the widespread integration of AI into all spheres of life require an update of educational content.

"Systematic work in this direction has begun in accordance with the instruction of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, given at the Republican August Conference of Educators in 2025. Since September of that year, work has been carried out in stages. Subsequently, the legal framework was strengthened. In November 2025, the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan 'On Artificial Intelligence' was adopted, and in May 2026, a presidential decree on the introduction of AI into secondary education was issued," the ministry said.

As part of implementing these documents, the state compulsory education standard, standard curricula, and standard educational programs have been updated. The subject 'Digital Literacy' for grades 1-4 has been renamed to 'Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence', and 'Informatics' for grades 5-11 has been renamed to 'Informatics and Artificial Intelligence'.

"This is not just about changing subject names. AI has become an integral part of digital technologies and informatics. Therefore, new sections on AI and 43 learning objectives have been included in the subject content," the ministry emphasized.

It is noted that schoolchildren already use AI tools in everyday life. Now the task is to teach them not just to use this technology, but to apply it consciously, effectively, and responsibly.

The ministry explained how students will be introduced to AI. In grades 1-4, within the section 'Media Literacy and AI', 17 learning objectives are provided. Students will learn about AI through simple examples from everyday life, master the basics of digital security, personal data protection, and responsible behavior in the digital environment.

In grades 5-9, within the sections 'Computational Thinking and Programming' and 'Health, Safety, and AI', 14 learning objectives are provided. Students will learn to effectively use AI tools in the learning process, formulate queries correctly, critically evaluate results, and adhere to cybersecurity and academic integrity principles.

In grades 10-11, within the section 'Data Management and Artificial Intelligence', 12 learning objectives are provided. The main focus is on understanding how AI works and its practical application. The content includes basics of machine learning, neural networks, data analysis, and applied cryptography.

The ministry stressed that the updated curricula for these subjects have been successfully tested in the past academic year and received positive expert reviews. They are currently in the process of approval in the established order.
