In the first eight months of 2026, Kazakhstan recorded 21,400 road traffic accidents — nearly 5% fewer than in the same period last year. The death toll fell 15%, from 1,446 to 1,230, while the number of people injured dropped 6%, according to infohub.kz.
Accident numbers declined in 17 of the country's 20 regions. The sharpest drops were in Ulytau Region (–41.1%), Abai Region (–33.3%) and Mangystau Region (–20.1%).
Fatalities fell in 16 regions. The largest declines were recorded in East Kazakhstan Region, down 37.8%, Almaty Region, down 31.1%, and Atyrau Region, down 27.1%.
In 2025, Kazakhstan's road death rate stood at 11.4 per 100,000 people — the lowest in a decade, excluding 2020. National highways account for 45% of road deaths. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, fatalities on the Karaganda–Almaty highway fell 47% after it was rebuilt.
