A video of an elderly woman reprimanding a young woman for wearing shorts that were too short is gaining traction on social media. The incident occurred on the street, and the clip has sparked a heated reaction from users. Correspondents from Kursiv LifeStyle looked into how the online community responded to the conflict, reports infohub.kz.
The footage shows the pensioner approaching the young woman and claiming that her appearance violates public order. In response, both began filming each other with their phones. The video's author did not specify the city where the situation took place, but based on certain phrases, it can be assumed that it happened in the capital.
"If you publish me, I will sue you and file a report for harassing me in a public place," the young woman wrote on her page, addressing the moral crusader.
The clip has literally divided social media: men and women of various ages are voicing their opinions. Many actively support the young woman, believing that comments about clothing are a first step toward rules like those in Afghanistan.
"File a report against her. In Kazakhstan, there is a specific article for this — Article 449 of the Administrative Code ("Harassment in public places"). Maybe next time she'll control her craziness," users comment.
"What right does she have to tell you what to wear! It's your business! You spoke to her very respectfully! You're a smart girl! Only you decide how to dress! Don't pay attention to these people. She's just jealous," others write.
"Can we start a flash mob in shorts? Please. I'm so worried that Kazakhstan will become Afghanistan," users note.
Others emphasize that despite personal boundaries, social norms do exist, and in Kazakhstan they differ from European countries.
"The woman who made the comment is right. The street is not your Instagram. Children, elderly, grandmothers, married people walk here. I don't know how exposed you were, but you could have just walked away silently. Why make a fuss?" commenters write.
"The woman is absolutely right: wear shorts to the beach, pajamas at home, tracksuits to the gym, rubber shoes (flip-flops, Crocs, etc.) to the bathhouse, pool, or beach. By the way, she is a beautiful, modern woman," others add.
Interestingly, it is mostly men who write about modest dress. Women, in most cases, understand that the girl wears open clothing in the heat.
The author of the post showed exactly which shorts the elderly woman disliked: they were bike shorts that barely cover the buttocks.
