A court in the Almaty Region has sentenced a man who stalked a woman over an extended period despite her unwillingness to communicate with him, NUR.KZ reports, citing the Department of the Penal Enforcement System. It is the first case in which such actions were classified under the stalking article, according to infohub.kz.
According to case materials, the man harassed the woman for a prolonged period despite her reluctance to maintain contact with him. He refused to let her go, continued sending her messages via WhatsApp and sought to force communication against her will.
In court, the victim said that the systematic stalking left her constantly afraid and sleeping poorly, and forced her to change her usual way of life.
The defendant fully admitted his guilt and repented. The court classified his actions under Article 115-1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which provides for liability for stalking.
In imposing the sentence, the court treated his admission of guilt and repentance as mitigating circumstances. No aggravating circumstances were established.
As a result, the man was sentenced to 100 hours of community service. In addition, the court barred him from approaching the victim.
The probation service will monitor the execution of the sentence and the convicted man's behaviour. He must register with the authorized body within the established deadline and, if he has no permanent job or place of study, register with the local employment authority within a month.
