A resident of Semey, described as having positive references from his place of residence and work, has been sentenced to a real prison term for inciting religious hatred on the social network Threads, reports infohub.kz.
According to the official Telegram channel of the courts of the Abai region, the inter-district criminal court of Semey found the man guilty under Part 1 of Article 174 of the Criminal Code (incitement of religious hatred). For nearly a year and a half, the citizen commented on other users' posts related to religion on Threads. Creating conflict, he deliberately posted comments aimed at inciting ethnic and religious hatred, insulting the national honor and dignity of citizens based on their religion and ethnicity.
The defendant fully admitted his guilt and requested a sentence of restriction of freedom. The prosecutor insisted on imprisonment. The sanction under Part 1 of Article 174 provides for a fine, restriction, or imprisonment for a term of 2 to 7 years. The court, considering mitigating circumstances — sincere repentance, no prior criminal record, first-time offense, positive references from residence and work, and absence of aggravating circumstances — imposed a sentence of 2 years in prison.
