Kazakhstan introduces tolls on Taldykorgan–Ust-Kamenogorsk highway

Starting July 11, 2026, a section of the Taldykorgan–Ust-Kamenogorsk republican highway became a toll road. Residents of eight districts are eligible for discounted passes, while other drivers have access to a free alternative route, reports infohub.kz.

KazAvtoZhol's Toll Road Directorate specified that discounts apply to vehicles registered in the Eskeldi, Aksu, Sarkand, Alakol, Urzhar, Ayagoz, Zharma, and Ulan districts. Pass prices vary by vehicle type: passenger cars get an annual pass for 1 MCI; minibuses up to 16 seats and light trucks up to 2.5 tons pay 1 MCI per month or 12 MCI per year; buses up to 32 seats and trucks up to 5.5 tons pay 2 MCI per month or 24 MCI per year; large buses (32+ seats) and truck trains up to 10 tons pay 3 MCI per month or 36 MCI per year; trucks 10–15 tons pay 4 MCI per month or 48 MCI per year; trailers, heavy trucks over 15 tons, and tractor units pay 5 MCI per month or 60 MCI per year. Passes can be purchased online at kaztoll.kz, by calling 1403 toll-free, at toll booths, or at customer service centers.

The company emphasized that toll roads are introduced only when a free alternative exists, and tariffs have been officially approved by the state.

The alternative route includes the regional roads Taldykorgan–Ushtobe–Molaly–Lepsy–Aktogay–Tansyk–Ayagoz–Karauyl–Semey and the republican road Semey–Ust-Kamenogorsk. “Repairs and improvements to these detours are carried out in stages based on regular road surface quality checks,” KazAvtoZhol noted.

According to the company, the new toll section has no surface defects. Along the highway, 24 roadside service facilities operate, including gas stations, hotels, campsites, and cafes; 23 rest areas are equipped, some with gazebos and repair ramps; there are also 14 well-maintained heated toilets.

“The development of roadside service facilities continues. As traffic intensity grows and investors are attracted, new facilities will be created in stages, which will ensure a higher level of service for toll road users and compliance with modern requirements,” the company concluded.
