An agreement to build two wind power plants of 500 MW each in Kazakhstan was signed in Almaty during a Kazakh-Chinese business forum attended by President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev. The document formalizes arrangements between Samruk-Energo, part of the Samruk-Kazyna group, and China Energy Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. and SANY Renewable Energy Co., Ltd., according to infohub.kz.
The document was signed by Kairat Maksutov, chairman of the management board of Samruk-Energo, Li Yahong, vice president of China Energy Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., and Tang Chao, general director for overseas investment at SANY Renewable Energy Co., Ltd.
The project calls for the construction of two 500 MW wind power plants, two energy storage systems of 150 MW and 300 MWh each, and 500 kV high-voltage transmission lines with a total length of about 800 km, connected to the Aktogay and Taldykorgan substations. The site will be located in the Zhetisu region. The agreement runs for three years with an option to extend.
Separately, Marat Akhmetzhanov, akim of the Akmola region, and Xu Ming Feng, director of business development in Central Asia at SUNGROW Renewable Development Co., Ltd., signed an agreement to formalize cooperation on wind power projects with a total capacity of 450 MW in the region.
At the end of 2025, the share of renewable energy sources in Kazakhstan's total electricity output reached 7%. The government aims to raise that figure to 15% by 2030 and to 50% by 2050. For now, more than half of Kazakhstan's electricity is generated by burning coal.
