Kazakh police are taking measures to shut down transit channels for cannabis-group drugs from the country's southern regions. As a result of targeted operations in the Zhambyl region, 120 kg of finished product and raw materials for drug production were seized, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the information media portal of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, near the village of Karasu in the Merken district, a local resident was caught red-handed while retrieving 20 kg of marijuana from an underground cache; he had previously been convicted multiple times for drug trafficking.
In the Shu district, near one of the plants, three local residents were detained while digging up and opening a cache containing five sacks of dried marijuana. The total weight of the seized drug was 72 kg. It is noted that two of those detained had previously been held criminally liable for illegal drug trafficking.
In addition, at the Turksib station on the Shu — Tatti railway section, two local residents were detained, and 25 kg of cannabis-containing plants were seized from them.
Criminal pre-trial proceedings have been launched in all cases of drug possession on an especially large scale under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Those detained have been placed in a temporary detention facility.
