Unfavorable meteorological conditions that trap pollutants in the atmosphere are expected on September 24 in eight cities across Kazakhstan, Kazhydromet warned, according to infohub.kz.
Forecasters say the conditions will affect Pavlodar, Aktobe and Almaty, and overnight in Kostanay, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Semey, Ridder and Astana.
Specialists explain that such conditions form during calm, light wind, fog and temperature inversion. In this weather, pollutants accumulate in the surface layer of the atmosphere, potentially worsening air quality.
People with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are most sensitive to air pollution. Precipitation, humidity and air temperature also affect pollution levels.
Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, especially near busy roads and other sources of pollution. Children and pregnant women are advised to avoid long walks.
People with chronic illnesses and allergies should carry necessary medications. Outdoor physical activity should be limited or moved indoors.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that storm warnings for September 24 were issued in all 17 regions of Kazakhstan and Astana, according to Kazhydromet. Dust storms, rain with thunderstorms, fog and gusty winds are expected in the regions, with high or extreme fire danger persisting in many areas.
