Lymph nodes often become inflamed during common infections, but when they remain enlarged for a long time without any apparent cause, it becomes a serious signal from the body. Oncologists at the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology (KazNIIOR) explained which symptoms require urgent examination and why this diagnosis no longer sounds like a death sentence, reports infohub.kz.

"Lymphoma is a group of malignant diseases that develop from lymphocytes (cells of the immune system). There are Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas," the oncologists explain.

The specialists listed changes that should not be ignored: enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin without an obvious cause; a lymph node that continues to grow or does not shrink for a long time; severe night sweats; unexplained fever; weight loss without changes in diet or physical activity; severe weakness and increased fatigue.

At the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology, they explain that these symptoms do not mean a person has lymphoma, but they require examination. It is impossible to determine the cause of lymph node enlargement on your own based on pain, density, or mobility.

How the diagnosis is established. "Contact your doctor at your place of attachment. After an examination, they will prescribe the necessary tests, examinations, and indications for consultation with a hematologist or oncologist," note the specialists at the Kazakh Research Institute.

Usually, to confirm lymphoma, a tissue sample obtained through a biopsy is necessary. Blood tests and ultrasound alone cannot confirm or rule out the disease.

Lymphomas are treatable. Oncologists note that modern methods allow many patients to achieve long-term remission, and for some types of lymphoma, complete recovery. However, treatment tactics depend on the type of disease, its extent, and the patient's condition.

"Do not delay seeing a doctor if a lymph node is enlarging or other symptoms persist. Timely examination helps determine the cause and start the necessary treatment on time," the doctors advise.
