American celebrity Kim Kardashian was awarded a symbolic €1 (515 tenge) in compensation in the case of an armed robbery that took place at a Paris hotel in 2016. That was the exact sum requested by the victim herself, who called the court's decision her main victory, according to infohub.kz.
The attack occurred on October 2, 2016, during Paris Fashion Week. Two men dressed as police officers burst into Kardashian's room, tied her up with plastic zip ties and tape, and made off with jewels worth more than $6 million (2.6 billion tenge). Among the stolen items was a diamond ring she had worn that evening to the Givenchy fashion show.
During the 2025 trial, Kardashian spoke about the fear she experienced. According to her, one of the attackers pulled her toward him when she was wearing only a robe, and at that moment she was certain he was going to rape her.
"I truly thought I was going to die. This crime has been the most terrifying experience of my life and has left a deep mark on me and my family. I will never forget what happened, but I believe in the possibility of growth and accountability, and I pray for healing for everyone," the celebrity stated.
Kardashian also recalled begging the robbers to spare her, saying she had children.
In 2025, eight people were found guilty of involvement in the robbery. Because of their age, the French media dubbed them the "grandpa robbers": six of the defendants were between 60 and 70 years old at the time of the trial. Initially, 12 people were charged in the case, but one died before the trial and another was unable to appear in court due to health reasons.
The convicted were given prison sentences, but after the verdict they were not sent back behind bars, since time spent in custody during the investigation had already been counted toward their punishment. For example, the alleged mastermind, Aomar Ait-Khedache, was sentenced to eight years, five of which were suspended, so taking into account the time already served in custody, he remained free after the trial.
In addition to Kardashian, the court awarded compensation to other victims. A former hotel employee received €109,500 (about 56.5 million tenge), and the hotel itself was awarded €50,000 (about 25.7 million tenge). Kardashian's stylist, Simone Breter, who was near her during the robbery, also received €1.
After the court's decision, Kardashian said she was grateful to the French authorities for investigating the case and holding those responsible accountable.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle wrote that Kazakhstani buyer and stylist Liliya Rakh had faced a similar situation. In July 2025, she said that during a work trip to Paris, all the jewelry she had brought with her for work was stolen from her hotel room. Rakh filed a police report, but no details about the progress of the investigation, evidence found, or suspects have been reported online since.
