Italian Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, held for the first time on the new Madring street circuit in Madrid, infohub.kz reports.
The 20-year-old started from second position. During the race, he capitalized on a virtual safety car situation and a time loss for leader Lando Norris during his pit stop. As a result, Antonelli took the lead and held it to the finish.
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished second. Reigning world champion Lando Norris of McLaren completed the podium. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished fourth, while Antonelli's Mercedes teammate George Russell came fifth.
For Antonelli, this victory was his eighth of the current Formula 1 season. In addition, the Italian made history as the first winner of a world championship round at the new Madring circuit.
After the Spanish Grand Prix, Antonelli strengthened his lead in the drivers' championship. The Italian now has 292 points. George Russell sits second with 211 points. Lewis Hamilton is third in the standings with 191 points.
