Kazakhstan's Kirill Prokhodov claimed the gold medal in the individual men's epee event at the U23 Asian Fencing Championships, infohub.kz reports.
In the final, Prokhodov faced Hong Kong's Wong Pak Yu. The Kazakh fencer won 15:12 to take the top step of the podium.
On his way to the title, Prokhodov won five of his six bouts in the group stage before successfully navigating every round of the knockout bracket.
In the round of 32, he defeated Sung Ka Wing of Macau 15:8. His toughest test came in the next bout, where he edged Kyrgyzstan's Daniil Lepikhov by a single point, 15:14.
In the quarterfinals, Prokhodov won an all-Kazakh clash against Georgiy Tinnikov 15:9, then got the better of another Kyrgyz fencer, Barsbek Raiymbekov, 15:10 in the semifinals.
Prokhodov had previously won a senior World Cup stage in Morocco as part of Kazakhstan's men's team. He has now added an individual U23 Asian championship title to that team success.
