In China, doctors discovered a sewing needle in the left ventricle of a 35-year-old man who had sought help for bladder pain, infohub.kz reports.
The patient, who has intellectual disabilities, came to doctors complaining of pain during urination and blood in his urine. A CT scan revealed several metal objects resembling needles in his body. They were located in the abdominal wall, pelvis, bladder, and genital organ. The greatest concern was a 36-millimeter fragment that had pierced the pericardium and moved in sync with his heartbeats.
Specialists decided to perform emergency surgery to remove the most dangerous object. The procedure was successful: surgeons extracted the sewing needle, which had darkened from corrosion. There were no signs of fresh wounds or scars on the patient's chest, indicating the metal had been inside the organ for a long time. The removal of the other objects was postponed due to high risks to his life.
After surgery, heart function temporarily deteriorated due to the stress and damage, but the man's condition soon stabilized. Nine months after discharge, doctors confirmed a steady improvement. Medics noted that such cases are extremely rare: since the 1960s, only 34 similar episodes have been described in scientific literature.
