A second criminal case related to a fatal traffic accident in a Kokshetau courtyard in May has been dropped, infohub.kz reports.
On June 23, the Kokshetau City Court heard the case against a woman charged under Part 3 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code (traffic violation resulting in death by negligence). The court established that in May 2026, the defendant, who did not hold a driver's license, hit a pedestrian while turning into a courtyard. The victim suffered severe injuries and died in hospital. The defendant said she got behind the wheel because her husband fell ill. The court sentenced her to 2 years and 6 months in prison. Under Part 1 of Article 74 of the Criminal Code (deferment for women with young children), the sentence was deferred for 3 years, as the convict has two minor children.
Separately, a case was opened against the vehicle owner who allowed a person without a license to drive, investigated under Part 3 of Article 349 of the Criminal Code. According to the Department of Police of Akmola Region on July 28, "based on the results of the pre-trial investigation, a procedural decision was made to terminate the criminal case under paragraph 3 of Part 1 of Article 35 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (in connection with the application of an amnesty act)."
In May, a video of the fatal hit-and-run in Kokshetau circulated on social media. The footage showed a car hitting a pedestrian and then running over her. The woman behind the wheel was later detained by police. Initially, two criminal cases were opened – against the driver and her husband, the car owner, who knew she had no license.
