Police in Kokshetau have uncovered a fraud scheme that used fake online accounts created under female names to deceive citizens, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to NUR.KZ, citing the Akmola Region Police Department, officers from the cybercrime unit identified two local residents. Investigators believe they created accounts with female details and struck up acquaintances with men online.
One of the victims was a 34-year-old Kokshetau resident. He said that in July of this year, unknown individuals defrauded him of 28,000 tenge through Telegram.
During the exchanges, the scammers gained the victims' trust and then asked them to transfer money under various pretexts. No in-person meetings ever took place — after receiving the money, they stopped responding.
A pre-trial investigation into the fraud is currently underway. Police are establishing all the circumstances of the case and checking whether the suspects may be involved in other similar incidents.
