A court in Kostanay has sentenced a driver who struck a married couple on a pedestrian crossing. The woman died from her injuries, while the man survived. The defendant received a prison term and was banned from driving for five years, the website infohub.kz reported.
According to the official Telegram channel of the Kostanay region courts, the criminal case was heard in Kostanay Court No. 2. The driver was charged with violating traffic rules resulting in a death by negligence (Part 3 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan).
The court found that in September 2025, the defendant, driving along Kairbekova Street, struck two pedestrians born in 1967 and 1963. They were crossing the road at an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing. The couple sustained injuries of varying severity, and the woman later died in the city hospital.
The defendant fully admitted guilt and asked the court to impose a sentence not involving isolation from society. The victims left the decision to the court's discretion. When passing the sentence, the court took into account mitigating circumstances: full compensation for property damage and moral harm to the victims, sincere remorse, and a full admission of guilt. No aggravating circumstances were established.
Taking into account the defendant's character, the victims' opinion, and all the circumstances of the case, the court imposed a sentence of two years' imprisonment to be served in a minimum-security correctional facility. Additionally, the driver was banned from driving for five years. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
