Prosecutors in Kazakhstan's Kostanay Region have launched a pre-trial investigation into the brutal treatment of detained men by police officers, infohub.kz reports.

The probe was prompted by a video that spread online. The footage shows two young men and people in police uniforms using physical force. One of the detainees tries to stop what is happening.

"I'm sitting still, quiet. Don't touch my brother! Rusya, they'll let us go," he says, while the second young man tries to leave the scene.

Judging by the voice, a woman intervenes in the situation. The same man explains to her: "He's suffocating, he can't breathe. They're beating him, it's just hard for him to breathe."

According to the Kostanay Region prosecutor's office, which spoke to a NUR.KZ correspondent, the supervisory body registered a criminal case on this fact on September 11, 2026, under Article 146, Part 3, Clause 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Brutal Treatment").

Special prosecutors are currently conducting a pre-trial investigation into the case.

"Under Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the interests of the investigation, the data of the pre-trial investigation are not subject to disclosure," the agency added.
