A resident of the Kostanay region nearly fell victim to online scammers after believing promises of high returns on investments. The man had already transferred over a million tenge to the fraudsters and was about to pawn his car to continue 'investing,' but his acquaintance suspected fraud in time and contacted the police, reports infohub.kz.
The incident occurred in the Kostanay region. A message about a possible case of online fraud was received on the '102' channel. As it turned out, a local resident, inspired by the offer of high investment returns, registered on a fake investment platform and transferred more than 1 million tenge to unknown individuals. After that, the fake financial consultants demanded additional funds, citing the need to pay commissions and receive profits.
To find the required amount, the man decided to pawn his car, valued at 1.4 million tenge. However, his acquaintance learned of his intentions, suspected fraud, and immediately notified the police. Officers from the Cybercrime Prevention Department of the Kostanay Region Police Department promptly arrived at the scene and explained the mechanics of investment fraud to the man, convincing him to refrain from further transfers.
Thanks to the vigilance of the acquaintance and the timely actions of the police, additional financial losses of 1.4 million tenge were prevented.
