The prosecutor's office of the Sarykol district in Kazakhstan's Kostanay region has secured the revocation of driver's licenses from 11 local residents suffering from severe mental disorders that make driving contraindicated. The court issued the rulings at the initiative of the supervisory authority, infohub.kz reports.
According to the prosecutor's office, a total of 11 drivers were identified with severe mental disorders that make driving dangerous both for themselves and for other road users.
In one notable case, a local resident regularly drove on public roads with a valid driver's license while suffering from schizophrenia and being officially registered at a psychoneurological clinic.
The supervisory authority stressed that such measures are not intended to restrict the rights of Kazakh citizens, but above all to prevent possible tragedies and protect people's lives and health.
"The prosecutor's office of the Sarykol district continues its work to identify and eliminate factors that may pose a threat to road safety," the prosecutor's office added.
It was previously reported that more than 10,000 people in Kazakhstan have lost their driver's licenses for medical reasons.
