Armenia has de facto stopped participating in the work of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and its future in the bloc will be decided by the member states, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, answering journalists' questions about Moscow's view of the situation around Armenia and the CSTO, infohub.kz reports.
"You know that Yerevan is now de facto not participating in the work of the CSTO. You have heard Yerevan's official statement on its position regarding the advisability of participating in the CSTO. Indeed, certain steps are set out in the founding documents. And from there, everything will depend on what kind of discussions take place within the organization," Peskov told journalists.
Earlier, CSTO Secretary General Taalatbek Masadykov said the CSTO Collective Security Council could consider stripping Armenia of its voting rights and suspending the nomination of its citizens to quota posts. Armenia announced in 2024 that it was "freezing" its participation, although the organization's charter does not provide for this, and stopped paying membership dues.
As reported earlier, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan commented on a call by a former CSTO secretary general to expel the republic from the organization.
Recall that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the country is not afraid of being expelled from the CSTO. He also explained Yerevan's position with the plot of the Armenian fairy tale about Kikos.
Not long ago, Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia would soon begin the process of applying for membership in the European Union. In addition, the head of the Armenian government allowed for the country's expulsion from the CSTO and noted that in such a case Yerevan would not have to decide on withdrawing from the organization on its own.
