Kazakhstan's railways are set for a major digital transformation, with the introduction of LTE-R networks, artificial intelligence, and modern cybersecurity systems. These and other innovations are planned under a partnership between Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) and Chinese tech giant Huawei, according to infohub.kz.
KTZ Chairman Yelzhas Otynshiyev met with Huawei's Senior Vice President for Enterprise Sales, Leo Chen. The two sides reviewed their cooperation and outlined next steps for developing the industry's digital infrastructure.
One of the key projects will be the deployment of LTE-R, a specialized wireless communication system for railway transport. It will ensure stable data transmission and improve real-time coordination of train movements.
In addition, KTZ and Huawei are discussing the creation of a data processing center (DPC) equipped with modern computing solutions, including Huawei technologies. This will enable the implementation of analytical systems and artificial intelligence for transportation management.
Another focus will be the launch of an Intelligent Operations Center (IOC). It will allow real-time monitoring of technological processes, data visualization, and efficient management of the railway network.
Special attention will be paid to protecting KTZ's digital infrastructure. Plans include establishing a dedicated cybersecurity center to counter modern information threats.
KTZ noted that the partnership with Huawei will allow the company to leverage international experience and advanced technologies to accelerate the digital transformation of its railways.
Earlier, it was reported that Kazakhstan is entering a new cycle of railway modernization. Over the past 15 years, total investments in the country's transport sector are estimated at around $35 billion. Additionally, American company Wabtec plans to export up to 15 locomotives from its plant in Astana in the coming years.
