Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and his conservation organization Re:wild, together with the Bezos Earth Fund, have unveiled a large-scale initiative called the Phoenix Species Project. The $200 million project aims to restore 100 of the most vulnerable species on the brink of extinction, reports infohub.kz.
The list includes mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, plants, and invertebrates from 30 countries. Among them are the golden-crowned sifaka, the shark-tailed ray, the green salamander, and other rare representatives of fauna and flora. Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund each contributed $100 million to the program.
A key feature of the project is providing stable funding over a five-year period, allowing conservation organizations to move away from short grant cycles. According to DiCaprio, protecting individual species helps preserve entire ecosystems—forests, wetlands, grasslands, and oceans—on which life on the planet depends.
