The 39-year-old became the first player in history to start in three World Cup finals. In all decisive matches, Messi led his team as captain. Brazilian defender Cafu also appeared in three finals but came off the bench in one.
Additionally, Messi became the oldest player ever to feature in a World Cup final. He won silver in 2014 and gold in 2022. At the time of this report, the 2026 final between Argentina and Spain is at halftime with the score still 0-0.
