Prominent investor Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, could acquire a significant minority stake in English football club Liverpool for a sum that values the club at more than $6 billion, according to the Financial Times, as reported by infohub.kz.
According to the Financial Times, a consortium of investors led by Amit Bhatia and backed by the Mittal family is in talks to acquire a significant minority stake in Liverpool. The group has hired advisers to work on the proposal and is actively discussing the deal with the club's current American owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Three sources said that any deal would value the club at more than $6 billion, one of the highest valuations in football history. The attempted deal underscores the enduring appeal of top English football clubs and the global reach of the Premier League.
FSG has already confirmed the consortium's interest in a statement to the FT. "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club," the statement said.
Bhatia has not yet responded to the publication. The FT notes that Liverpool is one of the biggest brands in global sports. The club has won the UEFA Champions League six times and a record 20 English league titles. Under FSG's stewardship, the club has undergone significant changes both on and off the pitch. In 2020, the club won the Premier League for the first time in 30 years. In 2025, the club secured another title. Liverpool also won the UEFA Champions League in 2019.
Indian businessman Lakshmi Mittal was CEO of the world's largest steel company, ArcelorMittal, from 2006 to 2021. In December 2023, Mittal commented on a deal with the Kazakh government under which ArcelorMittal Temirtau was transferred to another investor.
