Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has weighed in on recent remarks by White House chief Donald Trump about the need to replace Volodymyr Zelensky as Ukraine's president. He made the comments in a conversation with journalists, NUR.KZ reports, citing BelTA, according to infohub.kz.
Responding to a question from reporters, the Belarusian leader stressed that deciding who leads Ukraine is not within the US president's purview. "Do you want an answer from me as a politician, or do you want it straight? If you want it straight — this is my credo — this is not Trump's question. Who will be president in Ukraine will be decided by the Ukrainian people," Lukashenko said.
At the same time, the Belarusian president noted that Ukraine's current head of state, Volodymyr Zelensky, must fulfill his promises. According to Lukashenko, Zelensky once promised to serve only one term as president. "You have to go to elections. Trump is right about this: you promised — you have to keep your promises. But there should be no dictating. Trump should not dictate what Ukraine should do," he said.
Recall that earlier, White House chief Donald Trump sharply criticized Volodymyr Zelensky, saying Ukraine should find a new leader capable of making deals. Later, media outlets named four possible candidates for Ukraine's next president.
Zelensky himself said he is ready to hold presidential elections if Russia agrees to a 60-day full ceasefire. In response, the Kremlin rejected Zelensky's proposal for a two-month truce to hold elections in Ukraine. And recently, Volodymyr Zelensky said he does not intend to resign, and also commented on the possibility of holding elections now.
American businessman Elon Musk said the other day that Zelensky should leave the post of Ukraine's president. In a recent interview with Newsmax, Trump again sharply criticized the Ukrainian president.
